Weiß Schwarz Is Stacking Major Releases: Re:ZERO, Oshi no Ko, Frieren and NIKKE

Weiß Schwarz has never exactly been a TCG with a slow-release schedule, but even by its standards, this end of summer is kind of ridiculous.

In less than two months, Bushiroad is putting out four major Japanese booster sets from four licenses that really don't need much introduction:

Re:ZERO. Oshi no Ko. Frieren. NIKKE.

And as of today, we're already halfway through.

Re:ZERO Vol.4 kicked things off on July 24, followed just two weeks later by Oshi no Ko Vol.3 on August 7. Next comes Frieren Vol.2 on August 28, before GODDESS OF VICTORY: NIKKE Vol.2 closes out the run on September 19.

But what makes this streak interesting isn't only the names on the boxes. Each set has something that makes it feel worth paying attention to, from autograph cards and new illustrations to some genuinely interesting new chase cards.

So, halfway through this run, let's take a look at what we've already got, and what's still coming.

Re:ZERO Vol.4 Started the Run

First up was Re:ZERO Vol.4, released on July 24.

Re:ZERO has been part of Weiß Schwarz for years, so seeing it return isn't exactly surprising. But Vol.4 finally brings a lot of material from the anime's third season into the game, and Bushiroad clearly wanted the set to feel like a proper return.

There's a lot going on on the collector side: 14 foil-stamped signature cards, 14 newly drawn illustrations, SECs, SSPs, SPs and two first-edition handwritten autographed cards AGRs from Rem and Emilia voice actresses. That's a loaded premium lineup.

But more than anything, Vol.4 feels like the kind of Re:ZERO set people expected. The big characters are here, the chase cards are here, and Season 3 finally has a real presence in Weiß Schwarz.

It's not trying to reinvent the game, it's just a big Re:ZERO set doing what a big Re:ZERO set should do.

And then Bushiroad waited exactly two weeks before releasing another major anime license.

Oshi no Ko Vol.3 And Ruby Has Already Been Found

Oshi no Ko Vol.3 arrived on August 7, and this one has a pretty obvious focus.

Ai, Aqua, Ruby, Kana, Akane and MEM-cho are at the center of the set, with new illustrations and 12 foil-stamped SP signature cards spread across the six main characters. The set also features six SSPs and, for the first edition, one AGR.

And that AGR is where things get really interesting. It's Ruby.

More specifically, the card is “Lying Ruby” [OSK/S133-058A], featuring an actual autograph and serial numbering. It immediately became the clear top chase of the set, with early Japanese secondary-market estimates putting it in a completely different league from the regular SSPs and SPs.

And we didn't have to wait very long to see one.

The Number 001 Ruby AGR has already surfaced from a Japanese case opened Abroad.

There's something particularly fun about cards like this when a set has just released. Before release day, the AGR is almost this mythical thing sitting somewhere inside the print run, then someone actually pulls one, suddenly, it's real.

For Oshi no Ko collectors, Vol.3 already has its centerpiece.

And Now We're Only Halfway Through

That's where things stand on August 20.

Re:ZERO is out.

Oshi no Ko is out.

But arguably the two most interesting collector releases of this streak are still ahead of us.

And the first is only eight days away.

Frieren Vol.2 Has One of the Coolest Signature Ideas of the Four

Frieren Vol.2 releases on August 28, only a few months after the Renewal Edition that arrived earlier this year, that's a lot of Frieren in a short amount of time.

But considering the popularity of the series and just how naturally its artwork translates into Weiß Schwarz cards, it's hard to complain.

More importantly, Vol.2 has a chase concept that actually feels different.

Its three SSPs are double foil stamped signature cards.

Instead of the usual one character / one signature approach, the cards pair Frieren & Himmel, Fern & Stark, and Serie & Methode, with both cast signatures represented together.

And honestly, that's probably my favorite idea across these four sets.

Weiß Schwarz doesn't necessarily need a new rarity every time it wants to make collectors excited. Sometimes you just need to take something people already love signed cards and do something slightly more special with it.

A Frieren and Himmel double-signature SSP just makes sense.

There are plenty of other signed cards and new illustrations in the set, but those three SSPs are the cards that really give Vol.2 its identity.

And Then NIKKE Vol.2 Goes Completely Overboard

Then we get to GODDESS OF VICTORY: NIKKE Vol.2, releasing September 19.

And apparently Bushiroad looked at a normal signature lineup and decided that wasn't enough.

40 cast members are getting foil-stamped signature cards. Forty.

There's almost no point listing them all, the number itself tells the story.

NIKKE already revolves around a huge cast of collectible characters, so translating that into an enormous pool of signed Weiß Schwarz cards feels like the most obvious thing in the world.

And it makes opening the set particularly interesting. Instead of having only a handful of characters represented at the high end, there's a massive range of potential signature cards to chase.

But even among forty signed characters, one card is going to sit above everything else.

Cinderella's AGR Has a Lot to Live Up To

First-edition NIKKE Vol.2 will include an AGR of Cinderella with a handwritten autograph from Aoi Yūki, the Japanese voice actress of Cinderella.

And if you followed the first NIKKE Weiß Schwarz set, you probably already know why that's a big deal; The AGR from NIKKE Vol.1 became one of the most sought-after and valuable AGR cards in Weiß Schwarz. So Vol.2 has some pretty big shoes to fill.

This time it's Cinderella, one of NIKKE's most popular characters, with Aoi Yūki's actual signature.

Whether it reaches the same status as the first NIKKE AGR is impossible to know yet, but the ingredients are there.

And honestly, that's probably the card I'm most curious to see pulled from any of these four releases.

Four Sets, But Four Very Different Reasons to Care

That's probably what makes this whole release streak work.

It would be easy for four boosters to be released close together to start feeling interchangeable. They don't.

Re:ZERO Vol.4 is a big return built around Season 3 and a deep premium lineup.

Oshi no Ko Vol.3 already has its monster Ruby AGR out in the wild.

Frieren Vol.2 is trying something genuinely cool with its double-signature SSPs.

And NIKKE Vol.2 is going completely overboard with forty signed cast members and another potentially huge AGR chase.

They're all Weiß Schwarz.

But they're not giving collectors the same reason to open them.
