The Cyberpunk TCG Is Taking Over Kickstarter: Most ever funded TCG by crowdfunding
- 5 min reading time
A few months ago, CD Projekt Red announced its ambition to bring Cyberpunk 2077 into the world of trading card games.
At first, it sounded exciting — but also risky.
The TCG space is already packed with heavy hitters like Pokémon and newer entries backed by massive IPs like League of Legends. Breaking into that ecosystem, even with a strong license, is never easy.
And yet… the Cyberpunk TCG didn’t just enter the scene, it exploded.
A Kickstarter That Went Way Beyond Expectations
What started as a promising project quickly turned into one of the biggest Kickstarter successes the TCG space has ever seen.
The original funding goal? Around €87,000.
Fast forward to today — with about two weeks still left in the campaign — and the project has already surpassed $15 million.
It's been more that went further the meaning of the word "success".
The campaign didn’t just reach its goal — it multiplied it over and over again, driven by a wave of backers that kept growing day after day. Every stretch goal unlocked more content, more reveals, more reasons to stay engaged.
At this point, it’s not just a campaign people backed.
It’s one they’ve been following closely, almost like an ongoing event.

Built by Passion — Not Just Another TCG
The game is being developed by CD Projekt Red in collaboration with WeirdCo, a Seattle-based company founded in 2025 and focused entirely on trading card games.
Interestingly, this is their first major project — and they made a point early on to highlight something that resonated strongly with the community: Everything — from illustrations to design — is crafted by artists, with a clear intention to “bring back what it means to be human.”
And in a universe like Cyberpunk, that message hits differently.

Welcome to Night city
The first set, titled “Welcome to Night City”, focuses directly on the world of Cyberpunk 2077.
And this is where things really clicked for fans.
Early reveals showcased iconic characters like:
- V
- Johnny Silverhand
- Jackie Welles
- Panam Palmer
Not just as names on cards — but as fully realized pieces of art that capture their presence, their attitude, their role in the world.
Beyond characters, the game also brings in key elements from the universe itself. Cybernetic upgrades like Kiroshi optics appear as cards, reinforcing that feeling that this isn’t just a themed product — it’s an extension of the game’s identity.

And Then… Edgerunners Entered the Scene
Just when things were already looking strong, the project revealed something even bigger.
The second set will be dedicated to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
For a lot of fans, this was a turning point.
Characters like David and Lucy carry a completely different emotional weight compared to the game. Their story hit hard, and seeing them confirmed as part of the TCG instantly expanded its appeal.
It’s no longer just about Cyberpunk 2077.
It’s the entire Cyberpunk universe, brought together in one collectible format.

A Campaign Driven by Reveals and Momentum
One of the most impressive aspects of this Kickstarter is how alive it feels.
Every few days, something new drops:
- new character cards
- alternate artworks
- foil previews
- stretch goals unlocking additional content
And each time, the reaction is immediate.
People aren’t just backing and leaving — they’re staying, watching, reacting. The campaign has built a rhythm, almost like a live rollout, where every reveal keeps the momentum going.

A New Way to Experience Cyberpunk
What this Kickstarter has shown is simple:
People don’t just want to revisit Night City on a screen.
They want to interact with it differently, a new way to play, to collect it, to own a piece of it.
Whether it’s V, Johnny, David, or Lucy — these characters are no longer just part of a game or a series. A new way to enter and interact with its universe.

More Than a Game — Something People Actually Want to Hold
Visually, the cards lean fully into what makes Cyberpunk unique.
Neon colors.
Sharp contrasts.
Tech-heavy designs.
That mix of beauty and brutality.
Some of the foil previews already stand out as potential favorites — the kind of cards you don’t just play with, but keep, display, and come back to.
And that’s probably the key to this success.
This doesn’t feel like just another TCG trying to enter the market.
It feels like a project that understands why people love collecting in the first place.

The Cyberpunk TCG Kickstarter isn’t just a financial success — even if the numbers are impressive.
It’s a creative success.
A project that took a powerful universe, respected it, expanded it, and turned it into something tangible.
And with the campaign still ongoing, one thing is already clear:
This is only the beginning.
